MRC offers PhDs with a commercial edge
2 June 2010
The MRC is committed to developing and sustaining a close and productive alignment with industry in the UK. MRC Industry CASE studentships form part of this commitment, and at least five of the 35 positions will be within small and medium sized enterprises.
Successful applicants will receive a first rate, challenging training experience as part of a mutually beneficial collaboration between academic and industry research programme leaders. Industry CASE studentships offer students experience of both academic and commercial research cultures and access to a wider than usual range of technology, facilities and expertise.
Tamara Hirsch began an Industry CASE studentship last year at King’s College London in collaboration with biotechnology company Proximagen. She explains: “I absolutely love science. But I’m interested in so many different things, so for me doing an Industry CASE studentship allowed me to have interests in several different areas without having to put everything in one boat.”
The advanced research and generic skills gained by doing an Industry CASE studentship can enhance students’ future employability, and many go on to become research leaders in the future.
Industry CASE studentships are open to scientists within UK Higher Education Institutions, Research Council Institutes, Independent Research Organisations and companies registered for business and trading in the UK with a UK medical research and/or manufacturing base. The closing date for applications is 28 July 2010. More information, including how to apply, can be found at:
